A small to medium sized Amazon Parrot, this has to be my favourite Amazon parrot and I recently aquired a 3 year old pair which should go to nest soon I hope. Beautiful coloured parrot with it's white forehead, pink neck and a diffused maroon chest area.
Some 5 subspecies have been identified in the wild but in captivity most likely that they have been mixed or that the only subspecie recognised by most breeders is Amazona l. leucocephala originating from eastern and central Cuba.
Amazona l.palmarum is found in the Western side of Cuba.
Amazona l. caymanensis is found on the Grand Cayman Island.
Amazona l.hesterna is found on the little Cayman Island and Cayman Brac Islands.
Amazona l.bahamensis is found on the Bahamas islands of Great Inagua and Abaco.
This was a endangered Amazon parrot in the wild (CITES Appendix 1) athough numbers have increased in recent years, living naturally in the eastern and central regions of Cuba. World population of around 10,000 today
Having kept Blue-fronted and Orange-winged Amazons in the past, I would descibe this Amazon as relatively quiet compared to the others.
